Freak the Mighty
A faith like a guillotine, as heavy, as light.
Because later, when we're down by the pond and the first of the rockets is streaking up, up, up, Freak is making a fuss bacause he can't see. There are so many people crowded around, all he can see are feet and knees, and people are lifting their little kids up to see the fireworks explode like hot pink flowers in the sky, and so I just sort of reach down, without thinking and pick up Freak and set him on my shoulders.

В обществе этого принца он чувствовал себя примерно как в стоящей в стороне от дороги часовне, и потому мысль, что там ему, собственно, не место, совершенно исчезала от удовольствия глядеть на дневной свет через церковное оконце и скользить взглядом по бесполезному золочёному орнаменту, сложившимся в душе у этого человека, пока не возникнет смутный образ самой этой души, так словно он повторял пальцем извивы какой-то красивой, но сплетённой по странным правилам арабеске.

I never had a brain until Freak came along and let me borrow his for a while, and that's the truth, the whole truth. The unvanquished truth, is how Freak would say it, and for a long time it was him who did the talking. Except I had a way of saying things with my fists and my feet even before we became Freak the Mighty, slaying dragons and fools, and walking high above the world.
